Disappointing weekend for Galatasaray and Duncan Tappy in Superleague

19th July 2009
Superleague Formula – Zolder, Belgium

Race 1: Qualified 11th, Finished 9th
Race 2: Reverse grid start position 10th, Finished DNF

Duncan Tappy had a frustrating weekend in Belgium for his new squad Galatasaray. In qualifying he got blocked on his fast lap putting him just five-hundredths of a second from the quarter finals and setting his start position on the fifth row.

Race one didn’t start well with team confusion resulting in Duncan starting from the pit lane. When the pit stop window opened Duncan had made up places to lie in ninth, the car was going well and progress was being made. A pit stop problem cost the team 10 seconds which would have put Duncan out with the front runners. On new tyres his speed increased dramatically with his lap times dropping by nearly a second but it wasn’t enough to gain more positions.

The second race, held on a wet track, was essentially taken out of Duncan’s hands when on the first racing lap the Flamengo ex-F1 driver Enrique Bernoldi out-braked himself into the chicane and hit the rear of Duncan’s car resulting in too much damage to carry on. Duncan managed to get the car back to the garage

Duncan said: “Testing went well and in race one we had the pace and I set the fifth-fastest race time. Everything was looking good and we just had small issues that set us back – that was until the big issue that ended race two. Today just wasn’t our day.”
